Affiliate income is a two-stage funnel, and most people only work on the first stage.
Here's how to diagnose which one is actually broken and fix it.
Two numbers decide your affiliate income.
Multiply them together and you get your real performance.
Doubling either one doubles your income, but they break for completely different reasons and have completely different fixes.
Working on the wrong one is the most common reason affiliates plateau.
Before changing anything, work out which stage is failing.
Your affiliate dashboard should show clicks separately from conversions, and the pattern tells you where the problem is.
Checking takes two minutes and redirects all your effort.
This is the stage most affiliates ignore, and where the bigger gains usually sit.
The single biggest conversion killer is a mismatch between what your content led someone to expect and what they find when they arrive.
If you reviewed a specific product, link to that product's page, not the homepage.
If you mentioned a specific plan, link to pricing. Every extra step between the click and the thing you promised loses people, and someone who lands on a generic homepage after reading about one specific feature usually just leaves.
The best-converting affiliates do most of the selling before the click.
By the time someone reaches the merchant's site, they should already know what the product is, roughly what it costs, whether it fits them, and why you recommend it.
A visitor arriving pre-informed converts far better than one who clicked out of curiosity and now has to figure everything out on an unfamiliar site.
This is also why comparison and review content converts better than casual mentions: it does the qualifying work upfront.
Traffic quality beats traffic quantity, decisively.
A hundred visitors who genuinely have the problem your product solves will out-earn a thousand who don't.
That means being narrower than feels comfortable.
Content targeting "best project tool for freelance designers billing hourly" converts better than "best project tools," even though the traffic is a fraction of the size, because almost everyone reading it is a genuine candidate.
Every extra step between intent and checkout costs conversions.
The classic example is the discount code.
In practice, a meaningful share screenshot the post, get distracted, and never return, or arrive at checkout without the code and hesitate.
An auto-apply coupon link removes that failure point entirely.
The discount is already active when they land, with nothing to remember or type.
Affilitrak's affiliate links can carry an auto-apply coupon for exactly this reason, and it lets you say something concrete in your content: "discount applies automatically at checkout."
That sentence converts better than a code, because it removes both the effort and the doubt.
People abandon at predictable moments.
So you'll need to handle those in your content, before the click:
Answering these in advance means the merchant's page has less work to do, and the visitor arrives with fewer reasons to hesitate.
Some conversion factors are the merchant's, not yours, and it's important to know the difference so you stop blaming your content for someone else's checkout.
If a program consistently sends good, qualified traffic and still converts poorly, the honest conclusion is often that the program is the problem.
Promoting a better product is a legitimate fix.
This one silently costs affiliates real money.
Cookie duration is how long after a click you still get credited for a sale.
Business and higher-priced purchases often involve days or weeks of deliberation.
If a program's cookie window is short, you can genuinely influence a purchase and receive nothing for it.
Check the window before investing months of content in a program, and weight your effort toward programs whose windows match how long their buyers actually take to decide.
A recommendation is a reason to consider. A deadline is a reason to act.
Genuine sales, real launch pricing, and actual expiring offers all lift conversion meaningfully.
The word "genuine" matters here because manufactured urgency is transparent and costs you the trust that makes everything else work.

Improvement comes from isolating variables, not changing everything at once.
Small, compounding improvements beat dramatic overhauls.
Lifting click-through from 2 to 3 percent and conversion from 3 to 4 percent doesn't sound impressive, but together that's roughly double the income from the same traffic.
Worth saying plainly: some programs simply convert better than others, and no amount of optimization fixes a bad fit.
When evaluating, look at whether the product is genuinely good and well reviewed, whether the landing page does its job, whether the cookie window suits the buying cycle, and whether the commission is recurring or one-time, since recurring revenue means each conversion keeps paying rather than resetting.
The Affilitrak marketplace helps you compare on those terms rather than joining whatever you stumble across.
You can browse both storefront brand programs and Shopify app programs that pay recurring commissions on subscriptions, under one account, with an affiliate dashboard showing clicks and conversions separately across everything you've joined, which is exactly the data this whole diagnostic process depends on. It's free to join.
Affiliate income is clicks multiplied by conversions, and most people spend all their effort on the first number.
Check your dashboard, work out which stage is actually failing, and fix that one.
If clicks are low, the problem is placement, context, and giving people a reason.
If conversions are low, it's usually a mismatch between promise and destination, sending the wrong people, or friction at checkout that a cleaner link or an automatic discount would remove.
Fix the right stage and the same traffic starts earning considerably more.
